Vomit Phobia (Emetophobia)
Emetophobia is an intense fear of vomiting or seeing someone else vomit. Although this fear is common, particularly among children and adolescents, it can become overwhelming and significantly restrict daily life.
When Fear of Vomiting Takes Over
People may avoid certain foods, restaurants, travel, school, social activities, or anyone who appears unwell. They may also become highly alert to ordinary stomach sensations, which can increase anxiety and make nausea feel more noticeable.
Common Signs of Emetophobia
- Avoiding foods, restaurants, or eating away from home
- Seeking reassurance about illness or food safety
- Monitoring for nausea or stomach discomfort
- Avoiding travel, school, social events, or people who may be sick
- Feeling distressed by words, images, or conversations about vomiting
How CBT Can Help
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps people understand the cycle of fear, avoidance, and reassurance seeking. Treatment typically includes changing catastrophic thoughts, reducing avoidance, and gradually approaching feared situations at a pace tailored to each person.
Our Approach at HVCCT
Our psychologists provide structured, compassionate, exposure-based treatment tailored to each client’s age, symptoms, and goals. Through gradual, carefully planned exposure, clients learn to face vomiting-related fears, reduce avoidance and reassurance seeking, and respond differently to anxiety and ordinary bodily sensations. Treatment progresses at a pace designed to build confidence and help clients participate more fully in everyday life.
